Why is there a nondescript and barely noticed "b" in the word subtle?
The b in subtle is not alone and is very subtle in itself. It has brothers in words like doubt and comb(from different origins). The b comes to us from the Latin prefix sub= below/under, but the pronunciation comes from an earlier spelling of sotil.
